Development Trends in the San Fernando Valley Portion of the City of Los Angeles

The San Fernando Valley contains one of four major planning regions for  the City of Los Angeles.  In the 1998-1999 fiscal year the Valley accounted for 60% of the total industrial construction, and approximately 45% of the city's office and retail space.  With 969 dwelling units,  the Valley provided more total housing than either the Western Region, with 765 DU's, or the harbor with 196 DU's.  Housing production was about equal to the Metro Region with 983 DU's.  But, unlike the Metro Division where multi-family units comprised 84.7% of the total, 62.5% of the Valley total is comprised of single family residences.  This may be attributed in part to the availability of larger lots and subdivision opportunities in the Valley.
